Survey of Indigenous Houses in Bumthang district

From October 29 to November 3, 2023, I participated in the survey of traditional Bhutanese houses organized by the Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties. We conducted on-site surveys and documentation of old houses scattered across various areas in the picturesque Bumthang district. While rammed earth construction prevails in the western part of Bhutan, the eastern part is characterized by the prevalence of stone masonry. The Bumthang district, situated centrally in Bhutan, hosts villages where both construction methods coexist, offering a unique insight into the evolution of traditional house construction. Among the surveyed houses are those with local narratives stretching back several centuries. However, many of these structures face challenges in terms of preservation, as they either stand vacant or are in urgent need of repair. The Department of Culture, Ministry of Home Affairs, our counterparts in Bhutan, acknowledges the cultural significance of these heritage sites. Yet grapple with constraints in both budget and manpower to address these issues. The existing buildings stand as silent witnesses, revealing the evolving changes in house construction from the past to the present. I have once again recognized the need to continue providing modest yet crucial technical support.
